(Berlin) Shell has commissioned InstaFreight to transport Shell lubricants from Germany to warehouses in other European countries. The digital logistics company optimizes transport routes by road and rail, enabling Shell to reduce CO2e emissions per transport by up to half. The resulting savings amount to over 260 tons of CO2e per year.
According to the European Commission, the transport sector is responsible for nearly a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. InstaFreight’s mission is to support customers in reducing emissions through data-driven, sustainable logistics solutions.
Sustainability as DNA
“Sustainability is part of our DNA. From day one, we have been using our technology to optimize cargo space and reduce empty runs. With the offering of multimodal transport, we are taking another step to reduce our ecological footprint and enable our customers to have sustainable transport,” says Philipp Ortwein, Co-Founder & Managing Director at InstaFreight. “I firmly believe that green logistics is the future. Anything else is outdated in light of climate change. We are pleased that Shell shares this perspective and actively demands green logistics solutions!”
“The transport sector plays a fundamental role in global efforts to reduce emissions. Through InstaFreight, we can decrease the emissions caused by the transport of Shell lubricants across Europe. In a competitive tender, InstaFreight clearly met our high standards and requirements. With their highly data-driven analysis to reduce empty runs, efficient route planning, and the use of multimodal transport, InstaFreight delivers Shell lubricants safely, efficiently, and above all, with less CO2e emissions to our customers,” says Parminder Kohli, VP Lubricants at Shell.
Standardized Approach to Reporting
To carry out sustainable transports, InstaFreight creates the emissions balance based on the method of the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC), a standardized approach for calculating and reporting logistics emissions. Once this data is collected, InstaFreight analyzes the needs and requirements of the customer and offers a tailored approach to minimize transport emissions. The resulting measures include reducing empty runs as well as utilizing combined transport.
Shell’s enthusiasm for InstaFreight’s business model was already evident in 2020 through the investment of its corporate venture capital fund (Shell Ventures).
