31. March 2021BTK Befrachtungs- und Transportkontor GmbH from Rosenheim supports DS Smith with a green transport solution for paper recycling in the city of Zurich. The FTSE 100 listed company is a leading manufacturer of sustainable packaging and the largest recycler of paper and cardboard in Europe.
(Rosenheim/London) BTK transports around 8,000 tons of recycled paper from Switzerland to Germany each year using two LNG-powered trucks. As part of a round trip, BTK collects the recycled paper from the city of Zurich and delivers it to the DS Smith paper mill in Aschaffenburg. The use of LNG instead of diesel reduces environmental impact by 8.7 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
Andreas Koll, Logistics Manager Germany at DS Smith, comments: “We are more than just a recycling company. At our locations, we support local partners and municipalities. Therefore, we are pleased to further develop our relationship with our long-standing logistics partner BTK in Raubling near Rosenheim while helping the city of Zurich achieve its sustainability goals.”
20 Trucks with Liquefied Gas
Of a total of 159 own vehicles, BTK operates 20 trucks powered by liquefied gas. Managing Director Josef Heiss comments: “We are proud to work with DS Smith to leverage the benefits of LNG for more recycling and less CO2 emissions. With our joint commitment to sustainability, we are perfectly positioned.”
The collected waste paper from the city of Zurich is recycled at the Aschaffenburg paper mill and turned into material for sustainable packaging solutions. The transports using LNG technology contribute to the sustainability strategy “Now and Next,” with which DS Smith aims to save a total of 250,000 truck trips by 2025 and reduce its CO2 emissions by 30 percent based on 2015 levels.
