Duisburg with First Climate-Neutral Container Terminal in Europe
16. December 2021The excavators are rolling in Oberkrämer: The Rieck Logistics Group is currently constructing a modern freight and logistics terminal in the municipality of Oberkrämer in the Brandenburg district of Oberhavel. Approximately 26 million euros are being invested in the new location, which is set to become operational in August 2022. More than 80 new jobs will be created on site.
(Berlin) Highly modern and conveniently located: The new Rieck terminal is being built in the VGP Park Berlin-Oberkrämer in the northwest of Berlin and will have approximately 23,000 square meters of usable space. The logistics center will be equipped according to the latest standards – also in ecological terms. The freight and logistics facility will feature a solar roof for the production of renewable energy as well as charging stations for trucks and cars.
Once completed, the terminal will offer 12,000 square meters for shipment handling and 8,000 square meters as storage space. Additionally, around 3,000 square meters of office space are planned. To ensure smooth goods entry and exit, the new facility will have 103 gates, and the outdoor areas will provide space for 55 swap bodies.
Significant Capacity Expansion
“In recent years, we have seen continuous large increases in volume, especially in the Berlin area – the new capacities are therefore urgently needed,” explains Stefan Rieck, managing partner of the Rieck Logistics Group. “We are very pleased that the construction work at this ideal location is progressing according to plan.”
While the new building is being constructed in the northwest of Berlin, the Rieck headquarters is located in Großbeeren, southeast of the capital. “With the new terminal, we are optimizing our routes in the Berlin region,” says Stefan Rieck. “Thanks to the shorter distances, the vehicles can not only make more stops – we are also improving our CO2 footprint.”
Due to its location at the Berlin motorway ring (A10), the A24 heading north is also quickly accessible. Stefan Rieck: “This is another advantage for us, as it allows us to connect not only our locations in Hamburg but also our branch in Kavelstorf near Rostock even better.”
Operations to Start as Soon as Possible
Currently, earthworks are underway on the 67,000 square meter site. At the beginning of next year, the terminal will begin to rise as the first concrete columns are erected. Then it will proceed rapidly: Once the hall framework is in place, the roof structure, side walls, and interior construction will follow. By July 2022, shelving systems will be installed, and forklifts, furniture, and equipment will move in. Stefan Rieck: “In mid-August, we will celebrate the opening and start operations with a new team.”
