Sep 3, 2021 at 7:08 PMThe Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority recently received new Liebherr port mobile crane technology. The port has successfully operated two LHM 280 cranes for bulk handling for many years and is now preparing for future challenges. A new LHM 550 will give the company the ability to handle larger grabs and heavier project loads.
(Rostock/Toledo) The Port of Toledo is predominantly industrial and one of the busiest ports in the Great Lakes. Toledo is a city in Lucas County in the northwest of the U.S. state of Ohio, located southwest of Lake Erie. The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority has been active at the port since 1955.
Since 2010, two LHM 280 cranes have been in operation at the Port of Toledo. Both cranes are primarily used for bulk handling. TLCPA is very satisfied with the performance of the cranes and particularly appreciates the reliability of the two machines. However, to serve their customers in the bulk handling sector more quickly in the future, a new and significantly more powerful Liebherr port mobile crane of the type LHM 550 has been ordered.
Using larger grabs
The LHM 550 delivered by Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH is equipped with a 4.80-meter tower extension and a 54-meter boom. With a maximum lifting capacity of up to 144 tons, the new crane can use significantly larger grabs and thus handle more bulk in a shorter time. Furthermore, the significantly higher payload compared to the two existing machines opens up the possibility for the port to handle heavier project loads in the future.
Investments in future growth
“The investment in a third port mobile crane creates a more efficient handling capacity at the Port of Toledo, leading to shorter berthing times for cargo ships,” said Thomas Winston, President and CEO of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority. “The new crane means further growth for us, not only in the bulk sector but also in the project cargo business. The LHM 550 is not only more powerful but also an eco-efficient crane that meets the Tier 4 final emissions standard and features a highly efficient hydrostatic drive.”
