KION Group Enters Hydrogen Drive Manufacturing
12. January 2023About 30 kilometers north of the Saxon capital, the parcel service provider Hermes Germany is building a new sorting and distribution center on a total area of approximately 68,500 square meters. The operational start of the Dresden logistics center is scheduled for the Christmas season of 2023. Construction work has already begun. The new building, designed by the Bremen-based company Peper & Söhne and realized in collaboration with Goldbeck Nord GmbH, will be able to process more than 200,000 shipments per day at full capacity – with 60,000 shipments planned for the start.
(Thiendorf) Around 100 employees are expected to ensure smooth operations at the high-performance site in the future. The sustainability concept of the new building includes a Gold certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) and a photovoltaic system that will supply power to the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
“As the easternmost logistics center, our new building near Dresden will be a strategically significant hub for Hermes Germany. I am very pleased that our logistics network will be enriched with a powerful and future-oriented location this year – just in time for the Christmas season of 2023,” explains Marco Schlüter, Chief Operations Officer at Hermes Germany.
The new building in the municipality of Thiendorf is conveniently located due to its proximity to Dresden and Leipzig, as well as the A13 and federal highway 98, allowing several areas in the greater Dresden area to be supplied from there as soon as operations begin. The centerpiece of the site will be a logistics hall of approximately 8,850 square meters equipped with high-performance conveyor and sorting technology, which can initially process 15,000 shipments per hour – in the future, after further expansion, up to 25,000 shipments per hour. The operation of the logistics center is planned to be gradually ramped up. Additionally, an office and social building and a gatehouse will be constructed on the property, which will house a Hermes parcel shop.
“We are proud to once again collaborate with Hermes Germany and to accompany the construction of a modern and sustainable logistics center as an investor and project developer. Our thanks also go to the municipality of Thiendorf, which has consistently supported this new project constructively and results-oriented. The location in Thiendorf will surely be a success story for Hermes Germany,” says Christoph Peper, Managing Partner of the Peper & Söhne Group.
Hermes Germany has already collaborated with the Peper & Söhne Group for the realization of its distribution center opened in 2020 in Weyhe near Bremen.
Photovoltaic-Powered E-Mobility and Green Roofs
Like all new logistics locations of Hermes Germany, the Dresden logistics center is also to be awarded the Gold status of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). The certificate honors exemplary resource and environmental management.
To make the last mile to the parcel recipients increasingly sustainable, Hermes Germany is continuously working on electrifying its vehicle fleet. Accordingly, the charging infrastructure will also be consistently considered at the new distribution center near Dresden. The power supply for up to 40 planned electric charging points for electric vehicles will be provided by a photovoltaic system of about 3,100 square meters on the roof of the logistics hall. All other roofs of the administrative buildings will receive green roofs. From the start of operations, around 15 routes are to be driven daily from the logistics site to the region, including electrically operated ones. “The parcel delivery of the future must be designed to be as low-emission as possible. For Hermes Germany, a holistic sustainability concept when developing new locations is therefore as determining a factor as the location, the performance of the facilities, and committed employees,” says Schlüter.
