(Cologne) At the end of January, the new hydrogen fuel cell truck Hyundai Xcient Fuel Cell will roll out for the first time from the premises of the REWE Region West logistics center in Cologne-Langel. This marks the company’s next step towards low-emission freight transport. According to the company’s estimates, the new truck alone can save approximately 58,000 kg of CO2 per year compared to a conventional diesel truck. The vehicle has a permissible total weight of 27 tons, 18 Euro pallet spaces, and a range of about 400 km. With the associated cooling unit, it can be used like a conventional truck and deliver temperature-sensitive or frozen products. The H2 truck is fueled with green-produced hydrogen, making it 100 percent emission-free. The consumption is about 8 kg of hydrogen per 100 km, with refueling taking place at nearby H2 stations. A full tank (32 kg of hydrogen) takes about 11 minutes.
Another step towards forward-looking corporate policy
“We are excited about the new vehicle and are very proud to contribute our experiences to the entire REWE Group project,” says Eric Berendonk, Technical Director of REWE Logistics Region West. “This is another step in our forward-looking corporate policy,” he adds.
REWE is conducting various tests on alternative drive systems throughout the year. This includes analyzing process impacts and consumption metrics. The results will form the basis for future decisions regarding fleet acquisitions.
