La Palette Rouge Strengthens Activities in the DACH Region
12. September 2024Lithium-ion batteries are indispensable in numerous applications, from vehicles to mobile devices to e-bikes and energy storage. Almost anyone can and may transport new lithium-ion batteries. But what to do when the end-of-life point is reached, the battery is defective, or it is recalled? In these cases, e.punkt comes into play and covers the entire chain of battery disposal from packaging to transport to recycling.
(Köln) e.punkt was founded by the disposal network LOGEX, the logistics company Emons, and the recycling companies RE.LION.BAT. and STENA Recycling. All steps that a lithium-ion battery goes through from the point of generation to the black mass are coordinated with the collaboration of the partners and their core competencies to ensure proper and environmentally friendly disposal.
e.punkt takes care of the organization of proper and environmentally friendly disposal. The tasks are clearly distributed: everyone does what they do best. This is one of the guiding principles among the founders. Emons operates a container pool for the transport of critical batteries as the first logistics provider. Within 24 hours, the appropriate container can be made available at the disposal point through the Emons general cargo network. The packaged batteries are then safely transported to the Discharging & Dismantling centers – initially across Germany. There, the waste batteries are unloaded and dismantled, significantly reducing the fire risk posed by the batteries. In the subsequent recycling process, the so-called black mass is created, containing valuable raw materials that are reintroduced into the cycle. A major advantage for customers is that batteries are moved over shorter distances within the partner network. This saves time, emissions, and transport costs.
Lukas Fast, authorized signatory for sales at Logex, summarizes: “The e.punkt network enables partners to focus on their core competencies. With nationwide logistics and a smart container pool, efficiencies are created that were previously unavailable.”
“e.punkt offers customers the opportunity to work with just one supplier for nationwide disposal of lithium-ion batteries, which is an efficient alternative to the 1:1 relationship with multiple disposal companies. By limiting ourselves to the logistically sensible catchment area of our operations, we simultaneously increase our local utilization through e.punkt,” says Arne Seeger, managing director of Stena Recycling.
Sustainable battery cycle
“The future of e-mobility begins with a sustainable battery cycle. Extensive permits and reliable personnel with solid knowledge are required for the transport of hazardous and non-hazardous battery waste,” adds Enrico Hermanny, head of the Emons | Battery division.
