Sep 17, 2024 at 3:53 PMDelivery from the air instead of by land? Almost two-thirds (64 percent) of Germans would like to have packages delivered by drone. Interest in this form of delivery varies by location. In large cities, 68 percent are interested, while only 58 percent of residents in rural areas share this interest.
(Berlin) These are the results of a representative survey commissioned by the digital association Bitkom, conducted among 1,005 people in Germany aged 16 and older, on the occasion of the logistics fair IAA Transportation taking place next week.
Accordingly, a total of 56 percent of Germans wish for a faster advancement in the use of drones for product delivery. “Despite support and existing pilot programs, it will still take a few years before such deliveries become commonplace in Germany. The technology is available, but there are still too many questions unresolved, including airspace integration, data protection, and the establishment of safe standards,” says Bitkom CEO Dr. Bernhard Rohleder.
Despite great interest, there is also skepticism
The use of drones for delivery is met with skepticism despite the high level of interest: 51 percent of Germans are concerned that drones could cause damage through crashes or collisions. 45 percent believe that drone deliveries are only suitable for remote areas. And more than a third (39 percent) say they would feel disturbed by an increasing traffic of drones.
Note on methodology: The basis for the information is a survey conducted by Bitkom Research on behalf of the digital association Bitkom. A total of 1,005 people in Germany aged 16 and older were surveyed by phone. The survey took place from week 30 to week 33 of 2024. The survey is representative. The question was: “To what extent do the following statements about the use of drones in logistics apply to you or, in your opinion, to others?”.
