Finland Has Optimal Infrastructure for eFuel Production
28. January 2025The intermodal terminal in Bettembourg-Dudelange continues its investment plan to promote the energy transition. This transition began with the installation of the third portal crane at the intermodal terminal. The next component involves replacing the diesel-powered tractors with electric tractors from the brand MOL (model: YME 225).
(Bettembourg-Dudelange) This initiative significantly contributes to the electrification of activities and the reduction of the CO2 footprint at the terminal in Bettembourg-Dudelange. In 2022, CINEA and CFL terminals, in partnership with CFL multimodal, signed a co-financing agreement for the investment project PULSE (capacity, automation, digitalization, decarbonization, and modernization). A grant was awarded by the European Commission under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program, aimed at modernizing the intermodal terminal Bettembourg-Dudelange.
Since early November 2024, the intermodal terminal has put four electric tractors from the brand MOL into operation. Thanks to this new fleet, the intermodal terminal expects a reduction in diesel consumption from 144,770 liters in 2022 to about 30,000 liters in 2025. At the same time, CO2 emissions will significantly decrease, from 449 tons in 2022 to an estimated 90 tons in 2025.
These new electric tractors offer additional benefits beyond the ecological aspect, such as a significant reduction in noise and vibrations, thereby decreasing noise pollution in the vicinity of the terminal, no exhaust smell, smooth gear shifting without jolting, and better driving conditions for employees, as well as technological advancements that allow for remote diagnostics and reprogramming of the machines, significantly reducing the trips and on-site interventions of technicians.
The new tractors are equipped with tablet PCs connected via the 5G network, representing a major technological advancement. These tablets prove particularly useful for the operational team, which can now not only better anticipate orders but also optimize its workflow using these devices. All these advantages contribute not only to improving the working conditions of employees but also to reducing environmental impact and fostering a more pleasant working environment.
Decisive Step Towards Energy Transition
Laurent Erhard, Managing Director of CFL terminals: “With the introduction of our new electric tractors, we have taken a decisive step towards a sustainable energy transition while reducing our CO2 footprint and modernizing our operations. One final step remains for us to fully decarbonize our operations, and we hope to achieve this by 2027.”
